The Ceremony

The Ceremony

Coptic Orthodox Faith

Coptic Orthodox Christianity is the largest Christian Church in Egypt and is one of the ancient churches in the world.

It was established by St. Mark the Evangelist in the city of Alexandria around 42 A.D.

Sacrament of Holy Matrimony

The sacrament of marriage is a great mystery in the Coptic Orthodox Church, because our union in love reflects the human image of Christ and the Church. Through the matrimonial prayers the two of us become one in Christ.

The ceremony lasts 55 minutes and it is rich in symbolic meanings with plenty of hymns and chants being sang.

Alongside the exchange of rings and the anointing with Holy Oil, you will see that  the bride and groom are dressed with heavily embroidered crowns and capes. These signify the newly adorned king & queen of the new kingdom- their new home. The crowns are also a sign of  God's glory and honour that is bestowed upon us during the sacrament and that we become the glory of one another.

Coptic Church & Pope

The Pope of the Coptic Orthodox Church and the See of Alexandria is the successor of Saint Mark, Pope Tawadros II.

There are around 20 million Copts worldwide and the Coptic language is still used in our services together with both English & Arabic.

Final commandments

At the end of the matrimonial ceremony, the priest gives words of wisdom to the newly wedded as they kneel before the sanctuary as a witness of their unity before God. To live in harmony, stability and joy, the bride and groom should respect and submit to one another in humility and love.

Once we are officially married you will hear loud ululation, which is a cultural vocal sound expressing celebratory happiness.
